Clyde Rabideau's Season Ending
Checkout Stores Rally/Race
and the
Time Trial Awards Picnic
August 30, 1987
In addition to his Checkers Night-Spot, Clyde Rabideau owned a string of local convenience stores called The Checkout Lane. During the summer of 1987, Clyde dreamed up a bicycle road race which would start and end in Plattsburgh and course through Peru and Morrisonville, passing each one of his stores. At the end of August, Clyde made it happen, with the help of Janette King and the cooperation of the Plattsburgh Athletic Club.
The event was called a Rally, perhaps for insurance reasons, and was advertised for casual riders as well as racers, but everybody up in the front knew that it was a full-on race. The course started on Rugar St., headed west, then south on Military Turnpike toward Peru. With no police traffic control, the field was required to follow the rules of the road. We were asked to ride in a "controlled" group until we passed the traffic light where Rugar St. meets the Turnpike, but it didn't turn out that way, and the field was immediately broken up at the light with the eight strongest riders pulling away while the rest struggled to get through the cars at the traffic light.
Several chase groups formed, while the more casual riders paired up in the back and chatted. The first chase group of four rode hard for at least ten miles, finally catching the front bunch as they waited at a red light somewhere in the south-western swing of the course. The new group of twelve stayed together until it broke up again on the sharp little hill coming out of Morrisonville toward West Plattsburgh, where the same four went off the back.
They chased again in singles and pairs, but only one reached the front bunch as they waited at another light, on Route 374. These nine stayed together until things heated up on the small climb up Quarry Rd. Charlie Mitchell won the sprint down Boynton Avenue to the finish at the Checkout Lane store half-way down the hill. Here is the finish list.

(Yes, I was the one who rejoined the front bunch. I rode very hard and I felt that I rode smart. I was also very lucky that the leaders were caught at two traffic lights. It was probably my best-ever race and I've always been proud of my performance that day. DCW)
The Time Trial Awards Picnic
Later in the day, riders gathered in a back yard (Rabideau's?) for a picnic and season awards for the Time Trials. This is the only time in the first 35 years of the event that such an event has happened. Clyde Rabideau sponsored the picnic and, again, Janette King did much of the organizing. She went through the season records and computed five-best-ride averages for many of the riders.
At the picnic, Janette announced winners in four categories: Open, Women, Juniors, and Veterans. I brought photo-copies of clippings from the early days, and told about the day that we all rode with Jim Ochowitz. Here is the story that ran in the Plattsburgh Press Republican.
PAC cyclists hold awards party
PLATTSBURGH — The Plattsburgh Athletic Club, and Checkout Convenience Stores, presented seasonal awards for the top riders in the weekly bicycle time trials at the post-rally party Sunday. Riders had to participate in at least five trials to be eligible with the average of the top five trials used to determine winners.
Bill Broderick had the top average for senior men with a 24:19. Kevin Steward was next with a 24:53. Broderick had the fastest trial time, 24:01.
For the veterans, Bob Davies had the best average, 25:59, and top time, 25:41, with Don West posting the second-best average, 27:19.
Mary Kavanaugh swept top honors for the ladies with a 26:02 average at 25:51 time, which was also a new course record. Barb West was second with a 34:07 average.
Tom Gallagher led the juniors with a 24:52 average and 24:20 course-record time. Jeff McLane had the second-best average of
24:58.
Jim Duffany received the Sportsmanship Award, which was determined by a vote of the trial participants.
Trials will continue Wednesday nights, starting at six at the Point au Roche fire station. They are open to all at no cost. Helmets are required.
