Posted below are results of fifteen weeks of racing from the 1986 season of the Pt au Roche time trials, running from May into October! This was the period when the event was associated with the Plattsburgh Athletic Club (formerly the Plattsburgh Track and Cross Country Club) which sponsored most of the running events in the Champlain Valley. Modest sponsorship was provided by Checkers, a night spot on Margaret St. north of the paper mills and owned by Clyde Rabideau, who later became Plattsburgh's Mayor. At this time, PAC member Terry Nash organized the time trials and kept the records. We have a printed list, presumably produced by Nash, of best times for all riders (posted below) which was mailed out after the end of the 1986 season and shows that the time trials ran at least from May 16 to October 3 with no rainouts. However, the event was cancelled on the Fourth of July. Of the 20 weeks we are sure about, five results are missing. All but two of the results posted here were taken from newspaper clippings and were laboriously converted to text and then to web language (html) by scanning the clippings, using Optical Character Recognition (OCR), and then many steps of formatting, editing and proof-reading in Microsoft Excel, Word and Notepad. These partial results for the 15 weeks show 89 riders posting 291 results, all on the ten mile course. The official sheet distributed after the 1986 season lists 99 riders for the entire season.

Top Riders -- In the fifteen events posted, Ken Burl was the top rider with four wins and one second place finish in his five attempts, all in May and June. Later in the season, Bill Broderick turned in three wins, two seconds and a third in eight rides, but in three head-to-head competitions, Burl came out on top every time. Burl's best time of 24 minutes and 3 seconds was comparable to any turned in during the first thirteen years of the Pt au Roche time trials, but on June 20, a new force appeared. Larry Martel, a Burlington, VT bike shop owner, racer and race organizer, took almost a minute off the old record, riding the ten mile course in 23:10. The newspaper said that second-place Burl came into the event six-for-six. After Burl's one defeat, his name doesn't appear in the results for the rest of the season. Martel returned four weeks later and shaved off four more seconds. We thought that Martel's record of 23:06 would stand for a while but just two weeks later, on August 1, time trial specialist Spencer Yates drove down from Lake Placid and took off another minute, riding the course in 22:07. We finally had a record that would stand for many years. Laurie Grover posted the top time for women, a 26:26, very likely a course record for women. PSUC student Wendy Damsky rode three times, finally getting her time down 27:53. Just eight seconds back was Mary Kavanaugh who was later to marry Gerry Duprey and grow to dominate women's riding at Pt au Roche. Three consecutive weeks in July saw finish lists with 29, 30 & 29 finish times. In the 15 weeks posted below, Steve Beaver rode 14 times, while Craig King and Don West rode 11 times.
