Bicycle Time Trials
Results of the weekly events at Pt au Roche, NY
The 2009 season

After 17 events (plus two rainouts) running from May to September, the Pt au Roche time trial season is finished. We had 48 different participants turning in 260 finishes. The busiest Wednesday saw 20 riders participating.

Bruce Beauharnois dominated the ten-mile event with six wins in as many starts. Bruce finished under 22 minutes three times, the only athlete to break that magic barrier. His season-best time of 21:45 is just 14 seconds off the course record set in 1995 by Kevin Duniho.
Scott Woodward rode the 10 mile course six times, posting two firsts, two seconds and two third place finishes

Woodward also rode the 25 mile course three times, finishing under 60 minutes every time, and setting a new course record of 57:20. (Scott successfully defended his state time trial championship in the 50-54 year age group.)
Mary Duprey again dominated the women's competition with 13 wins, ten on the 10 mile course and three wins on the 25 mile course. However this season we welcomed several other good female riders.

Ralph Senecal and Ed Armstrong each recorded perfect attendance, riding in all 17 of the 10-mile events. Mary Duprey, Jason Amoriell and Don West followed with 13 rides each.

Bruce Beauharnois
Bruce Beauharnois powers to the line to post the best time on a windy night, August 26. Bruce is the only competitor this season to ride the 10 mile course in less than 22 minutes, which he had done no less than three times. His season-best time is 21:45, just 14 seconds off the course record set in 1995 by Kevin Duniho.

Who's Jeff McLane?

Observant readers may have noticed that August 19 winner Jeff McLane typically rides the Time Trial just once a year, and rides very fast indeed. Who is this mystery rider? Jeff grew up in Morrisonville and raced as a junior in the North Country. At last count, Jeff was living, working and racing in Cincinnati, and when he visits his family in the summer, he tries to join us on a Wednesday evening.

The Saga of August 5

Conditions at six pm on August 5 were perfect for a bicycle race -- partly cloudy, light wind, pleasant temperatures, good turnout -- but the cycling gods had other ideas. The first few riders enjoyed these ideal conditions, but then two competitors were stopped on the course by two big farm wagons completely blocking both lanes of the roadway as they transferred a load from one to the other. The racing was suspended briefly, then resumed, with a few blocked riders making a second start.
The road was open the rest of the evening but then, somehow, the timekeeper accidentally zeroed the official race watch. Using her analog wrist watch and times kept by some of the riders, she managed to record dependable times for most of the riders.
Then there was the van that someone tried to drive across a swampy section of the firehouse lawn. Lots of riders got mud sprayed on their legs as they tried to push the van out, but in the end it reqired a tow strap and a Subaru. We intend to repair the deep trenches left in the otherwise beautiful lawn.

Season Best Times
The list below shows, for each rider, the number of weeks riding and best time posted.
You may download a spreadseet showing complete results from the entire season.
(The sheet is wide and cannot be viewed on a computer screen all at once. Part of the reason is that all times are shown with an extra "0:" (0:25:37 rather than 25:37). Excel does not seem to handle elapsed times gracefully and this is the best way I have found. If anyone has a better way, please let me know.)
