Bicycle Time Trials
Results of the weekly events at Pt au Roche, NY
The 2011 season

After 19 successful events (no rainouts) running from May 11 to September 14, the 2011 Pt au Roche bicycle time trial season is finished. We had 66 different participants turning in 274 finishes. The busiest Wednesday saw 26 riders participating.

We congratulated nine different winners in the ten-mile event this season. Scott Woodward posted five wins in eight rides while Bruce Beauharnois, with four wins in four rides, emerged as the only undefeated rider. (Woodward also won his fourth straight state time trial championship.) Still another rider, Erik Bollt, recorded the best time of the year -- his 21:59 was the only time under the magic 22 minute barrier. Jason Amoriell (with 3 wins) and Jeff Krywanczyk (2 wins) were the other multiple winners. One time winners were Bollt, Logan Franks, Ashton Momot, Bruce Gugliotta and Jay Ruff.

Jeff Krywanczyk posted fastest time on the 25 mile course, finishing in 61:21.

Mary Duprey again dominated the women's competition with 10 straight wins, 8 in the 10 mile event and 2 on the 25 mile course. (Mary hasn't been topped after her first few rides in 1986.) Four times this season, Mary placed second overall, the most second place finishes for riders of either gender. (Mary also competed in National Champioship and World Championship triathlons.)
The Lanterne Rouge (for last place) goes to perennial starter/timer Barb West who refuses to see herself as a septuagenerian and again rode the 10 mile course.

The award for most dependable rider goes to Ed Armstrong who rode all 19 weeks. Jason Amoriell and Stacey Brooks followed with 13 rides each, and four others participated in 10 or more events.

Final Time Trial of 2011

Ten riders came out to enjoy perfect conditions on the final night of the season, and three riders turned in season-best time. A gentle breeze from the north-east wasn't strong enough to blow away the thousands of mosquitoes born after the huge rains of August.

There should be plenty of good bicycling weather before the snow flies, so have a great fall and winter -- get some good rides and some great skiing, and come back next spring ready to do it all over again.

After a light rain persisted through the entire day, only three riders showed up at Pt au Roche where they found no rain, calm air, and roads wet but not soaked.
The conditions seemed to make for a fast night, but the times don't prove that out.

** With no orange cone marking the spot, Bruce missed the turn-around and rode at least an extra mile up the road before turning and repeating the extra mile.

Mary Duprey, age group winner
Mary's World Championship Triathlon
Mary Duprey traveled to Reno, Nevada where she competed in the World Championship 70.3 Triathlon (Half-Ironman) on September 11, placing 20th out of 37 finishers in her age group. Mary struggles with the first event, the swim, and because the water was warm "I could not use a wetsuit [but I] survived." Of course, the next leg, the 56 mile bike ride, is Mary's best. She left the transition in 36th place in her age group and posted the third fastest ride, passing 17 riders to move up to 19th position. She held her own in the run, dropping just one place to 20th. Mary's bike time of 2 hours 49 minutes and 44 seconds was only 2 minutes and two seconds slower than the fastest time in her class.
Congratulations Mary!
You can see complete results on the Ironman site, or see the data recorded by Mary's Garmin GPS device (dist, elev, heart rate, etc.) in three sections:   the swim,   the bike,   the run.

Mary Competes well in National Championships
On Wednesday, August 17, Mary Duprey did the timing instead of riding the time trial. She was resting up for the Age Group National Championship Olympic Distance triathlon to be held right across the lake in Burlington on Saturday, August 20. The results posted on the internet show that Mary did very well, finishing 18th among 68 finishers in her age group -- her time: 2 hours 30 minutes and 30 seconds. Mary's run time was right in line, 19th fastest of her 68 competitors, and as usual, Mary turned in a spectacular time in the 40 km bike leg. Her time of 66 min. and 46 sec. was second in her class, shaded by just 12 seconds by winner and grand champion Donna Smyers, and 59 seconds faster than the third place bike time. Mary's bike ride was faster than all of the women in the older age groups, and even in the immediately younger class. We have to look two classes down where we find just two riders faster than Mary. Congratulations Mary!
... as did Jon Parks who finished 24th out of 121 in his age group, posting a time of 2:11:32. Well done, Jon!   Also competing was occasional TT participant Jim Cunningham (67) of Ticonderoga who finished in 2:53:34.

Congratulations to Scott Woodward
Frequent Pt au Roche TT winner Scott Woodward successfully defended his state time trial crown, winning the 55-59 age group in the State Championship events in 59 minutes and 5 seconds. Scott had a healthy margin of one minute and 24 seconds over the second place rider. Doug Chase finished eighth in the same group, and Erik Bollt placed second in the 35-44 category. Congratulations to all three.

Conditions were very similar to the previous week: record high temperatures dropping toward evening, and strong winds. Somehow the winds didn't seem as difficult, perhaps because they swung around a bit from SSW to WSW, or even to the west. In the end, five of the 13 riders in the ten mile event recorded season best times.

Mary Qualifies for World Championships -- Again
Mary Duprey, age group winner On Wednesday, June 1, Mary Duprey helped with the timing instead of riding the time trial. She said that was resting in preparation for the Mooseman triathlon. What she didn't say was that the Mooseman half-ironman event was a qualifier for the world championship race to be held in September in Las Vegas. After the race, Jason Amoriell shared with our local TT gang an e-mail from Placid Planet congratulating Mary on her great race. "Mary won her age group and was first in the bike and run!" Now we learn in the Press Republican that class winners in the Mooseman race automatically qualify for the Las Vegas world championship event. In a listing of 100 female competitors, Mary's bike time was bettered only by ten professional triathletes and two women in the 35-39 age group. [ See results on Mooseman site.]
Mary competed in the 2010 World Championship 70.3 mile triathlon in Clearwater, Florida, placing in the middle of her age group and turning in the fastest bike leg of all women aged 45 and up!
Congratulations Mary, and good luck as you prepare and race again in the World Championships.

Twelve riders battled a very strong southwest wind on a day when record high temperatures dropped ten degrees before start time. The air cooled, but the very strong winds that cleared out the hot air persisted right through the ride, harrassing the riders on both the north and south legs of the out and back course. We expect times to improve during the early months of the season and indeed the six riders who participated in weeks two and three improved by an average of 35 seconds. However, the eight who rode in weeks 3 & 4 posted times averaging a minute and 24 seconds slower due to the wind.
The lake continues to approach the edge of the road, but with an off-shore wind, there were no waves to wet the course.

Clouds threatened all day, but the rain held off and some more good times were posted.
Lake Champlain was still high after another three inches of rain fell during the week, but again the course was good. Temperatures were pleasant except where the south-east breeze cams off the lake and immediately onto the course, where the air was chilly. And this week we had no tractors blocking the roads. All good!

Lake Champlain stood nearly a foot above the previous high water record and in a couple of spots on the course, the waves lapped at the white line on the east side of Lakeshore Rd. Water was not a problem, but a few riders were held up by giant tractors towing immense farm equipment which blocked the entire width of the road as local farmers tried to catch up on field work delayed by record April rains.

Season Best Times
The list below shows, for each rider, the number of weeks riding and best time posted.
You may download a spreadsheet showing complete results from the entire season.
(The sheet is wide and may not be visible all at once on your computer screen. Part of the reason is that all times are shown with an extra "0:" (0:25:37 rather than 25:37). Excel does not seem to handle elapsed times gracefully and this is the best way I have found. If anyone has a better way, please let me know.)
