After 17 successful events (and two rainouts) running from May 15 to September 18, the 2013 Pt au Roche bicycle time trial season is finished. We had 68 different participants turning in 270 finishes. The busiest week saw 27 riders participating. The 25 mile course was closed for most of the season for construction of a new bridge at the 9.5 mile point on the course, so we had no 25 mile rides.
We congratulated seven different winners in the ten-mile event this season. Jack Piller posted 6 wins and 2 second place finishes in his 8 rides and Bruce Beauharnois followed with three wins in three rides. Bruce also posted one of the two times under the magic 22 minute mark. He rode 21:55 but was eclipsed later in the season by Mike Wynn who showed up just one time and rode 21:45. His season best in a single try matched his performance in 2012 -- Mike is fast! Jason Amoriell, Corey Hamelin and Kevin Duniho each posted 2 wins, and one-time winners were Mike Wynn and Jerry Macner.
|
Four riders: Jack Piller, Kevin Duniho, Scott Woodward and Beauharnois, posted times in the 22 minute range. Mary Duprey again dominated the women's competition, emerging undefeated in eight rides. (Mary hasn't been topped after her first few rides in 1986.) The Lanterne Rouge (for last place) went to Jim Waldron and his young son Evan who rode the 10 mile course on a mountain bike and a tag-along. We had only three rides of the 5-mile course by Micael Nash, who rode the course in a fast 16:46, Devin Gosselin and six year old Matthew Macner.
The Ralph Senecal Award for most dependable rider went, for the fifth straight year, to Ed Armstrong who rode all 17 weeks. Matthew Speirs followed with 13 rides while Lynne Murray and Ralph himself had 11.

And indeed, those who motored north from the fire station found the road was drenched and rain was falling half way up the course, not to mention the squall winds that would have hammered the riders. We agreed to try again next week, on Sept. 18, and we hope to see you there.

Mary Duprey qualified for the 2014 World Championship Half Ironman by placing fourth in her age group last weekend in the 70.3 mile event in Muskoka, ONT. Mary and Gerry traveled to Muskoka early and previewed the course. Mary reports that she had a good swim, the fastest bike leg in her age group, and a good run. It was cool, indeed so cool (47F at the start and a high of 62) that she needed to dress properly to stay warm enough. Next year's championship will be in September in nearby Mont-Tremblant, Canada.

Seventeen riders braved chilly (62 deg.) windy conditions with a few sprinkles in the air to complete the ten mile course.
The strong WNW winds didn't keep five of the 17 from posting new Personal Best times (marked PR) and two more to ride season bests (marked *). This week's new rider, Prof. Taher Zandi, is marked with "-".

The strong south wind made it a hard night to record a good time, but a dozen riders
took on the challenge. Comparing tonight's times to the riders' season bests and even counting two season bests (new rider Whalen and an improvement by Rorbah on his only previous ride) the 12 times averaged 46 seconds slower than the season best times. A strong wind will do that.

It was a pleasant night to ride, and the light SE wind didn't keep riders from improving on their times. In a field of 23 starters we saw 12 season best times and welcomed five new riders.
First-timer Blais misunderstood the course instructions and turned a mile early. Tandem bicycles are fast but Jim Waldron and his young son Evan are campaigning on a mountain bike with a tag-along -- not so fast, but we salute them.

Rider/Timer/Reporter: Mary Duprey With one tandem team riding, we don't know whether to count 28 riders or 27 bikes, but in either case, it's a new high for the season. On paper it should not have been a fast night, but it looks like the riders have been training well. In addition to the five new entries, we saw 12 repeating riders posting season-best times. In the table at left, a dash (-) marks a new entry and an asterisk (*) marks a season best time. The tandem team is marked with 'T'. |

The Plattsburgh YMCA held the 9th annual Tour de Rand Hill bike race on Saturday morning, July 20. The race, which starts at the Y and climbs Rand Hill, finishing at the Y's Camp Jericho, is a revival of the Y's Harold Raymond Race, following the same course. Bruce Beauharnois and Alicia Chase were the men's and women's winners. Thirty three riders completed the event, and one dropped out after being involved in a small crash. We hope that Erin is OK. About half of the riders in the field are TT regulars so we thought, rather than recognizing each one individually, we would just post the entire finish list here. The results posted Tuesday in the newspaper contained at least two gross errors so you may notice some differences -- we got the changes from the Y. Showers forecast for race day morning stayed away during the event but some riders got wet on their ride back down to Plattsburgh. In the finish list at right, an asterisk (*) marks a class winner and double-star indicates an overall winner. The Y follows the practice that the overall winner shall not be recognized as a class winner. |

Temperatures in Plattsburgh topped out at 97, or 99, depending whose gauge you believe, and the humidity was extreme. Late thunderstorms showed up with lightning visible to the north of Pt au Roche and thunder to the west, but the TT went off without a hitch, or a lightning strike or a soaking. Mary wrote "the cycling Gods were watching over us." |

The showers forecast for the day stayed away so the ride went on, but in a strong south-east wind. It would have been interesting to know the time splits for the two halves of the course. We guess that some riders may have taken 8 to 10 minutes longer for the return trip into the wind than for the first half with the strong tailwind. In spite of that, Jason Amoriell's winning time was only 12 seconds off his season best. Good ride Jason! |

The area experienced scattered showers but the rain held off long enough for a successful time trial. The calm, humid air made for a fast night producing many season-best times. Another good night with some more fast times. Nineteen riders finished the course -- it would have been 22 but three had problems. Sandy Rasco and Korey Devins both suffered flat tires while Owen McCullum broke a chain. Scott Woodward tells us that he was pleased with his ride in the New York State Time Trial Championships last Saturday. Scott recorded a good time and finished fourth, just 15 seconds out of the medals. |

Another good night: the rain stayed away, temperatures were friendly and the wind was very light from the south. Sixteen riders showed up and turned in some very good times. Jack Piller improved on last week's time to take the win. A dozen riders rode last week and again this week and every one rode faster this week. Improvements ranged from 16 seconds up to two minutes and 16 seconds. Mary Duprey had a fast ride going when she suffered her first flat tire in 28 years of time trialing at Pt au Roche. Scott Woodward took almost two minutes off of last week's time as he prepares for the state TT championships this weekend. Good luck Scott -- have a great ride! |

Off and on rain stopped in time for five hardy riders to complete a damp course. However the wind didn't stop -- a raging wind blasted up the course from the south-east, forcing some riders onto their small chainrings for the return half of the ride. Duniho, who has ridden the course for years, called it "the worst ever."

You may download a spreadsheet showing complete results from the entire season. (The sheet is wide and may not be visible all at once on your computer screen. Part of the reason is that all times are shown with an extra "0:" (0:25:37 rather than 25:37). Excel does not seem to handle elapsed times gracefully and this is the best way I have found. If anyone has a better way, please let me know.)
